At first David Donde was a lowly chicken farmer on his family farm, diligently building a free range egg brand one emancipated hen at a time. He somehow realised
his desire to work in the hospitality industry by building & starting the Barnyard Farmstall, later purchasing a guest house in Greyton in the Overberg. With a love of good coffee, his frustration at the lack of the availability of fresh, high quality, roasted coffee beans led him to buy a roaster and soon he began roasting his own coffee.
Shortly thereafter, a travelling coffee aficionado visited and was amazed at the quality of Donde’s coffee. Before long they covered every table with cups as they perfected their pouring technique – and a damn fine partnership and obsession was born, taking the form of Origin Coffee, Cape Town.
Quickly developing into South Africa’s leading speciality coffee resource, with Donde the senior barista trainer, coffee consultant, equipment specialist and resident shit stirrer, coffee evangelist & Marketing Geek.
David left Origin and established TRUTH. coffeecult, now South Africa’s highest quality artisan roastery. Every facet of coffee was looked at and a relentless focus on improvement, elegance, simplicity and quality embarked upon
David Donde is also the founding Chairman of SCASA (Speciality Coffee Association of Southern Africa). “Great coffee is a process, not a destination,” says Donde – and it’s this philosophy that he and the team practice daily; not stopping until world-class coffee is sold and consumed across Southern Africa.His Baristas have taken first place in both South African National Barista Championships.
David Writes as a motoring journalist and was with GQ & GQ Cars, Blaque & now writes for MPH wheels 24.com and various others, is a member of the SA Guild of Motoring journalists and is a Talk Show Host on 567 Cape Talk & 702 when no-one is listening.
